The room was bare. A single bulb buzzed overhead. The man sat across the table, hands cuffed, eyes hollow. He had been here before—three times, to be exact. The interrogator, a woman with sharp cheekbones and a voice like dry ice, leaned forward and slid a photograph across the table. “Do you recognise this place?” The man didn’t answer. She smiled, slow and thin. “That’s the cellar where you kept them. We found the latch. We found the hair.” He flinched. She stood up, circled the table, and whispered into his ear: “You’re going to tell me everything. Not because you want to—but because you no longer have a choice.” She placed her hand on his shoulder and squeezed just hard enough to make him wince. “Let’s begin.” He heard the lock turn behind him. There was no way out.
